چکیده

The introduction of smart phones and other smart gadgets, which offers ubiquitous internet access and other diverse multimedia applications, has lead to the explosive growth of mobile data. However, this also increases the energy consumptions and carbon footprint of the mobile communications industry. The recent advancement in green telecommunication networks explores energy saving through dynamic base station (BS) switching algorithms. One such strategy is to entirely turn off some under-utilized BSs during low traffic periods. The decision metric for this switching strategy is the system load, however the system load doesn’t always vary at the same rate over space. Residual energy can be used as a more reliable metric for switching and it is independent of traffic variations. Normalized residual energy based algorithm can be implemented effectively in both homogeneous and heterogeneous environment. A Game Theoretic Framework for Green HetNets Using D2D Traffic Offload and Renewable Energy Powered Base Stations

This chapter investigates the interplay between cooperative device-to-device (D2D) communications and green communications in LTE heterogeneous networks (HetNets). Two game theoretic concepts are studied and analyzed in order to perform dynamic HetNet base station (BS) on/off switching. The first approach is a coalition-based method whereas the second is based on the Nash bargaining solution. A...

A Survey of Green Base Stations in Cellular Networks

The growing awareness towards energy efficient cellular networks has paved way for new technologies in designing green cellular networks. According to technical analysts, the base stations are the most energy intensive part of a typical cellular network. Saving power in base stations is therefore the primary focus in green cellular networks. The main goal of designing green base stations is for...

A Load Balancing Handoff Algorithm for Green Wireless Networks

Two major challenges facing 5G are energy efficiency and mobile users’ mobility in heterogeneous wireless networks. Using algorithms based on the base station (BS)’s switching between ON and OFF modes, can improve the energy efficiency of the network. In this paper, we consider mobile terminal’s seamless mobility problem joint with BSs which are able to switch between ON and OFF modes. Also, we...

BOOST: Base Station ON-OFF Switching Strategy for Green Massive MIMO HetNets

We investigate the problem of base station (BS) ONOFF switching, user association, and power control in a heterogeneous network (HetNet) with massive MIMO, aiming to turn off under-utilized BS’s and maximize the system energy efficiency. With a mixed integer programming problem formulation, we first develop a centralized scheme to derive the near optimal BS ON-OFF switching, which is an iterati...
